Psalms 1

Psalm 1    KJV

1 Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.

2 But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.

3 And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.

4 The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away.

5 Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.

6 For the Lord knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish.

The first Psalm is a short Psalm about the Godly, Un-Godly and Eternity.

The Godly and unGodly

THE GODLY

The Psalmist says the Godly person is blessed.

They are not counseled by the ungodly, which means they doesn’t live or walk by the advice or encouragement of those who live in sin, not knowing their God.

They do not stand in the way of sinners which I take to mean that they do not frequent or patronize places where sin abounds.

Finally, they don’t recognize the scorn that is emitted from the scornful. Many times, those that do not know Christ as Savior have a bitter or scornful attitude toward those who live a Godly life. They often make fun of, ridicule, and mock those who live Godly lives.

But the Godly person doesn’t let it bother them and treats the scorner no differently than they treat others.

The delight of the Godly person is God’s Word and the teachings of Jesus Christ. They read, study and meditate on the Word daily.

Their life shall be like a tree planted by the water. It will be fruitful and bountiful.

They shall prosper in the Lord.

THE UNGODLY

The Un-Godly are like chaff that is blown away

The Psalmist simply says, the ungodly are not so.

They do not live in obedience to God.  They live in sin and mock those who live Godly lives.

They are ungodly.

They are like the chaff which is blown about by the wind. They have no concrete convictions or beliefs. They have no roots, unlike the tree planted by the water.

They will not be able to stand in the judgement, in other words, they will be found guilty.

Nor will they be able to be in the presence of those counted as righteous.

They will perish.
