The Psalmist David says in the 23rd Psalm “my cup runneth over.”
David is referring to the blessings and abundance received from God and note that he doesn’t just say “my cup is full.” No, David praises God for so many blessings that he exclaims “my cup runneth over.”
God blesses all of His children, but it is ironic that Christians who have the least amount of money and material goods are often the most thankful of all for their blessings. There is an important lesson in this, but it must come later.
Those who are less fortunate in the area of wealth and material goods realize the true spiritual blessings of God and are thankful for what they do have.
If we stop to think of the blessings that God has bestowed upon us, we will realize as did King David, that our cup truly does run over.
If all we have been blessed with is God’s love, mercy and grace as evidenced on the cross of Calvary, our cup runs over. With Christ as our Savior, we are God’s child and assured of life eternal with Him. What a blessing! This, is in fact, all that we need.
However, in the short time we live on this earth, God’s blessings are abundant. There are talents and gifts that God has granted. We have our jobs. We have our homes. We have our families. Most have plenty to eat. God even blesses us in ways we are not yet aware of.
Please read and meditate on the words of the song “Thank You Lord For Your Blessings On Me”, written by James Easter, Russell Lee Easter and Edward Franklin Easter;
Verse I
As the world looks upon me, as I struggle along
They say I have nothing, but they are so wrong
In my heart I'm rejoicing, how I wish they could see
Thank you Lord, for your blessings on me
Verse II
Now I know I'm not wealthy, and these clothes , they're not new
I don't have much money, but Lord I have you
And to me that's all that matters, though the world cannot see
Thank you Lord, for your blessings on me
Chorus
There's a roof up above me
I've a good place to sleep
There's food on my table
And shoes on my feet
You gave me your love Lord
And a fine family
Thank you Lord, for your blessings on me
As we consider our blessings, thanking and praising God for them, let us remember those who are less fortunate, as there are many who do not enjoy the physical blessings that we do.
Jesus tells us the following;
Matthew 25:34-40 English Standard Version
34 Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, 36 I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.’ 37 Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? 38 And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? 39 And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ 40 And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers,[a] you did it to me.’
If there is any way that we can help someone less fortunate along the way and do it with the love of Christ in our heart, we will be even more blessed than before.
Our cup will indeed run over.
