Matthew 7:3 NIV
3 “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?
We use all kinds of detectors in our daily life, to keep us safe. The fire detector, the smoke detector, the carbon monoxide detector and all types of safety detectors in newer automobiles.
There is another detector we use by choice to find something of value. We use it to look for things. The metal detector.
Well, unfortunately there is another detector that we humans use to look for things and many folks have the top-of-the-line product. I call it the “fault detector” and like the metal detector, it is used to find things.
Some human fault detectors are so finely tuned that people find fault with their kid’s school, their employer, their boss, their spouse and most everyone they meet. Their “fault detector” is beeping constantly. Like a metal detector, it gives an alert, indicating that a real or perceived fault in someone or something is found.
Wouldn’t it be great if everyone had a “good trait” detector? There is good in everyone, if we look for it. Even in those who have faults.
But just like “bad news”, many seek out the bad or the faults in people.
Why? Why do people look for faults in others, or in things?
Psychologists tell us that people find fault in others to make themselves feel better, or build themselves up. However, this propping up of oneself is short lasting and requires the human fault finder to find more goodies.
Sure, there are legitimate reasons and times to find fault, but in these instances, we should try to help.
The one question we should always ask ourselves is this; “What would Jesus do?”
When that internal “fault detector” starts beeping away, we should immediately shut it off and stop to think.
Let’s look at what a former Roman emperor (Marcus Aurelius) and Greek philosopher (Plutarch) had to say about finding fault;
Turning to the greatest of all sources, think about what Jesus had to say about treating others. Then think about the question “what would Jesus do?” and about our own faults.
Then realize that Jesus would treat the cause of the “fault detector’s” beeping with dignity, respect and love.
Friend, as an ambassador of Christ and the light of the world, we have a greater responsibility. We must show the love of Christ to all and help add believers to the body of Christ.
What is the best thing to do?
- Get rid of that “fault detector” immediately. It is a tool of Satan and we must get him behind us and move on.
- If there is a situation where you can be of help, do so with Christian love.
- Look for the good that is to be found in others and all things.
Finally, develop and cultivate a “good trait” detector and then enjoy it as it beeps away.
You will actually feel better about yourself, as Satan is no longer pulling some strings and you will be the ambassador of Christ that God desires.
